Kolhapuri Chappals
Kolhapuri Chappals are native to the Indian state of Maharashtra. They are strong, open-toed, handcrafted leather footwear, typically made in shades of brown, yellow and orange. Artisans from villages like Kapashi, Kurundwad in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra have their own distinct designs of Kolhapuris which they have been practicing for years. This handcrafted footwear in earthy tones resonates with the history and culture of Maharashtra.
Kolhapuri Chappals were traditionally worn by the members of the Royal family of Kolhapur and marked as a symbol of elegance. It is an age-old craft that truly flourished under the rule of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur, there's also an exquisite design which is named after him (shown in the picture below).

Nowadays, artisans often struggle with the rise of cheap, fake Kolhapuris gaining popularity in the market. Making of Handcrafted Kolhapuri Chappals is a long and arduous process starting with sourcing good quality leather and tanning it well to cutting, stitching, braiding, trimming, punching, carving, decorating, polishing and assembling the pair of chappals. They're meant to last a lifetime if maintained well.

Kolhapuri styles are distinguished by their center strap, braiding technique and thickness of the sole. As mentioned earlier, there are distinct design styles like Kapashi, Kurundwadi and substyles like Jaad Kapashi, Paper Kapashi, Aamdar Kapashi, Senapati Kapashi etc. Also, there are other interesting types like Aawaj Kolhapuris which make a *karrkarr* sound as you walk. It is a result of a fruit called "vinchu" which is inserted into the sole creating a bulge. The sound helped keep wild animals away while walking. Kolhapuri Chappals were considered safe and useful to wear in jungles, farms and battlefields as well.
